Do you want to take care of the efficient functioning of your muscles and the optimal level of energy during the day? Pay attention to adequate intake of magnesium from your diet. Magnesium, affecting the nervous system, is necessary for the proper functioning of muscles and is involved in many important physiological processes for our body. Together with vitamin B6, it contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and helps maintain normal psychological functions.

Magnesium is one of the minerals necessary for proper development and functioning, so we must provide it with food. It is a cofactor of about 600 enzymes, taking part in, among others, in muscle contractility, protein synthesis, thermoregulation, maintenance of the osteoarticular system and regulation of blood pressure. It affects the homeostasis of the electrolyte economy and is also involved in the metabolism of ATP (adenosine-5′-triphosphate). It acts as a regulator of glucose concentration in the body, which is essential for well-being and maintaining energy at a constant level. Magnesium together with vitamin B6 contributes to the maintenance of proper energy metabolism, helps in the work of the nervous system, maintains proper psychological functions and contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. It has been noticed that people exposed to stress may have lower levels of magnesium in the body [1]. Deficiency of the element has been associated with increased production of free radicals contributing to premature ageing of the body [2]. The causes of magnesium deficiency are considered to be disorders of the gastrointestinal tract and kidneys, eating disorders, medications, high fibre intake, alcohol abuse, as well as practising intense sports and exposure to stress. Magnesium deficiency may be manifested by headaches, poor mood and well-being, lack of energy, poor sleep quality, heart disorders, tremors and muscle cramps, as well as erectile dysfunction in men [3]. Therefore, our diet should not lack sources of magnesium, such as: pumpkin seeds, nuts, cocoa, whole grains, avocados, legumes. You can find vitamin B6 in whole grains, fish, meat, legumes, egg yolk and bananas.
