Vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, niacin, pantothenic acid and biotin contribute to the maintenance of normal energy metabolism, while folic acid, vitamins B6 and B12 help to maintain adequate homocysteine metabolism. B vitamins are obtained primarily from the diet. Thiamine is found in meat, fish and whole grain products. Riboflavin can be found in milk, eggs and lean meat, among others. Niacin is found in both animal (e.g. poultry) and vegetable (e.g. nuts) foods. Pantothenic acid (one form of vitamin B5) is mainly obtained from chicken, beef and whole grain products. Sources of vitamin B6 are e.g. liver and fish, as well as starchy vegetables. Biotin can be provided by eating offal, fish, eggs and seeds and nuts. Green vegetables (e.g. spinach and Brussels sprouts) and liver are rich in folic acid, while vitamin B12 is mainly found in foods of animal origin (e.g. meat, fish, eggs and dairy products), which is why vegans and vegetarians are most often deficient in this substance [4,5]. B vitamin deficiency can manifest itself in different ways - depending on how severe the deficiency is and which substances are missing. The most common symptoms of insufficient B-complex deficiency include muscle soreness, paresthesias, inflammation of the corners of the mouth, roughness of the skin, fatigue, sleep and coordination disorders, peripheral neuropathy, anaemia, depressed mood, cognitive dysfunction and immunosuppression [5].
