D-mannose is a bioactive monosaccharide (simple sugar) that is produced by our body in small quantities. The substance is also found in relatively small amounts in some plant-derived products such as cranberries, oranges, apples, peaches and maize [1]. Studies suggest that D-mannose may reduce the incidence of recurrent urinary tract infections and alleviate the accompanying bothersome symptoms. One of the main causes of urinary tract infections is Escherichia coli infection. Several interventions have noted that the consumption of D-mannose can impede the growth of E.coli through interactions occurring on urinary tract epithelial cells and within cell receptors such as integrin. Thus, it is suspected that D-mannose may facilitate the removal of bacteria with urine and thus have a beneficial effect in reducing the frequency of infections [3,4]. Studies confirm that the substance is well tolerated and the positive effects of D-mannose have been observed with a supplementation of 2 g per day [5]. However, do not forget to take care of proper intimate hygiene and hydration at the same time. Adequate fluid intake, i.e. a minimum of 30 ml per kilogram of body weight, is an essential element of prevention in recurrent urinary tract infections.
