Apollo’s Hegemony Vitamin D3 is a dietary supplement containing vitamin D3 in softgels containing 2000 IU of the vitamin each. Unlike most vitamin D3 supplements, this product contains vitamin D3 from a non-animal source, which makes it vegan and vegetarian friendly.

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), sometimes referred to as the sunshine vitamin, is the main form of vitamin D. It can be synthesized in skin exposed to UV-B radiation out of 7-dehydrocholesterol, which is located in cell membranes. Although the sun has the ability to increase vitamin D production, however, it also plays a large role in the increasing the incidence of skin cancer and causes photoaging, which are problems that affect millions of people every year. Since only a small number of food products of animal origin contain vitamins D and they are often insufficient to meet the daily requirement of vitamin D, the best way to prevent vitamin D deficiency is supplementation.

The most dominant function of vitamin D is the regulation of calcium and phosphate homeostasis, increasing their levels in blood serum and, consequently, maintaining a healthy skeletal system. Only 10-15% of calcium and about 60% of phosphorus would be absorbed without vitamin D, which clearly shows its importance in the process. Apart from affecting bones, normal calcium levels in blood plasma are also necessary for the functioning of the neuromuscular junction, vasodilation, nerve transmission, and hormonal secretion.

Scientists have also been discovering the positive effects of vitamin D on other processes, such as the functioning of the immune system, cognitive functions and mood, and reducing the risk of some types of dementia, periodontal disease, type 1 diabetes, and autoimmune diseases. The properties were discovered along with the existence of vitamin D receptors (VDR) in most tissues in the body.
